Buck and I left this past Tuesday morning at 6:30 a.m. on a flight from Colorado Springs to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina to attend the wedding of Buck's son, Jeff Pressel. We got approximately 3 hours of sleep the night before as we had to get up at 2:30 in order to get ready and be at the airport by 4:30 to check in. It was 37 degrees in Woodland Park when we left. I was aware that the south was having another one of those hotter-than-a-three-balled-billy-goat summers, so I should not have been surprised when we stepped off the plane in Myrtle Beach later that afternoon and got slapped in the face by a very humid 101 degrees. We panted to our hotel room as quickly as we could and dared not come back out lest we might spontaneously combust.
The following day - the day of Jeff's wedding - was considerably cooler and slightly overcast with a threat of storms in the afternoon. This was a bit worrisome since the wedding was to be held on the beach at 6 o'clock in the evening. Buck and I decided to head out early to find where the wedding was to take place in case the weather turned ugly later. Three hours and numerous expletives later, we finally found what we were looking for - and it turned out to be only about 10 minutes away from where we had started. It's amazing where one wrong turn will take you. We had just enough time to get back to our hotel, get ready, and leave again.
The wedding ceremony was beautiful. The sun came out just in time, and a gentle breeze was blowing. Jeff and his new wife, Annie, make a lovely couple and we are very happy for them.
We flew home Thursday afternoon. Buck and I both had to have our luggage searched at the Myrtle Beach airport security - apparently the truck keys in his bag and the boxed candle holder that I had received as a thank you gift from Annie at the wedding sparked some interest. We made it through the search with no beatings or repercussions and we boarded the plane. At about the time our flight was scheduled to leave the storm that had been predicted to come through for the past two days finally hit - and we sat on the tarmac watching the rain for nearly an hour. We finally made it to Atlanta and after we raced through the airport to hopefully catch our next flight on time, we discovered that it, too, was running almost 30 minutes late. Silly us - we'd forgotten that hardly any flights out of Atlanta leave on time.
We arrived back in Colorado Springs about 8:30 that night, overjoyed to see our mountains once again. We had a great trip, met some nice folks, and ate our weight in fresh seafood - but it sure is wonderful to be back home where the air is dry and we are not in danger of catching fire every time we walk out the door.
